That sounds really official, doesn’t it? I hope you didn’t get your hopes up too high. 
Between the two of us, we managed to get the vegetable garden planted after getting home from the lake early Monday afternoon. My good-natured, helpful husband turned over all the rows with a shovel for me, as it became apparent, after I started, that I did not have the physical stamina to turn over the entire garden and plant it all in one day. 
(It’s wonderful to have a good partner.)
So, he turned over all the rows and then I worked them a bit with a long-handled claw (one of my favorite garden tools–no kneeling necessary!).
It took me most of the afternoon to get the rows ready and the plants in. But I eventually accomplished it. Here’s the rundown.
The two rows closest to the camera are herbs. Yes, that’s a lot of herbs. I did the usual rosemary, basil, thyme, and sage, but I also tried a few new things. Spearmint and peppermint were among the new ones–I really hope I don’t regret that. Also lemon balm, which I’ve done before, and which I will probably regret (it’s a real spreader, like mint). But I also decided to add parsley, which I almost never use in cooking–it really doesn’t have much of a flavor to me, so typically if a recipe calls for parsley I just substitute something else. That said, I’ve never actually used fresh parsley, so maybe that will make all the difference.
Then there’s a row of cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage–three things I’ve never planted before and probably wouldn’t have bought, but someone gave us a bunch of seedlings and I have a hard time turning down free plants.
Then there are two rows of beans (Jade bush bean and a purple bush bean that I can’t remember the name of at the moment) and a small row of purple dragon carrots.
On the other side of the path (which, at the moment, is also housing our three hanging plants that would normally be hanging from the deck and the wheelbarrow, which hasn’t been put in its proper place yet) are tomatoes and just a few jalapeno peppers, in addition to my turnip seeds for the U of M seed trials. Let me just say that, wow, turnip seeds are small.
So now it’s just to wait for those seeds to come up and the first tomatoes to appear on the vines–always such an exciting prospect.
